Hi guys!

I'm fairly new to my Rebel and I would like to try and do some of my own work on it. My first mod is going to be the gear indicator because I always forget if I'm in 5th or 6th.

What Tools do you suggest I have readily available to get into it and for routine maintenance?


Also can anyone recommend a lift stand? My understanding is that you can't use the swing arms because of the exhaust being in the way. Anyone have a work around for this?

Swing arm stand is much better than the snap jack. Do a search on this site - a number of members have improvised lift stands that work with the stock muffler.

You will need no tools for fitting a gear indicator - except an allen key to get the seat off (I think there is one on the bike). Otherwise it is a matter of threading wires under the tank.

I use a stand on the swing arm (standard exhaust). I have to be careful and site it to suit the can.

What others have said about the gear indicator, yes. There's an Allen key right on the inside of the right side plastic fairing right by the seat. Snap it off and you'll find an Allen key held in place by a small screw. Use it to take off the seat, and you'll find a number of wrenches and maintenance tools already there.

The gear indicator hooks up to the Datalink connection right above the battery (it's right by the makeshift screwdriver under the seat, and it's got a red clip).

Extra tools needed if not under the seat: a decent set of wrenches of various sizes. Some hex bits of various sizes with a nice low torque wrench that can easily fit in little nooks and crannies. I got these:

No luck with stand yet...I got a couple more months to figure this one out for storage...

I got a set of spool adapters from trex racing and a spool stand from harbor freight. No need to take off my two brothers exhaust. I just put spool adapters where nothing would hit when I used it. (Slightly forward of where they showed to put them in pic they had posted)

Front and rear stands from Cycle Gear. $60/each, nice for maintenance and winter storage. No need for spools, and the rear stand just barely clears the stock muffler.

Allen socket set. Get a decent quality set so you don't strip bolts. Also, I believe the allen key that comes with the bike is a 5mm. Most bolts on the bike are 5mm-8mm.
