Here's something I don't get. These two bikes have the same engine. But why is there such an large amount of posts and reviews saying the Rebel 300 is under powered...and so many reviews of the CBR300R saying it's a spirited ride?


I went back to the dealership today. I wanted to check out that clutch cover sticking out on the 500 (vs the 300). It wasn't so bad today, but it still bugged me.

The engine is tweaked between the cbr and the rebel, but yeah, even with that considered it shouldn't be much difference between them.

And you notice the bump now, because you are focused on it, but when you start riding it will slip away from your mind and you wont notice it any more :wink2:

Transmission gearing, sprockets and rider position all contribute to performance.

Honestly and this may sound dumb, I bet a big difference is the people riding them. Most people who ride small sport bikes tend to be smaller skinner people. And the cruiser style tends to have a lot of bigger riders. And when you are talking about a 300cc bike the difference between being a 170lbs vs 200+ is quite large.

Is there really a 300cc sports bike?? These are entry level cycles. Neither of them are spirited rides. You have to go to 750cc and up. That said I think my 500 is a great bike it makes riding fun again like when I was much younger, but it isn’t my 1800. You have to have realistic expectations.

Is there really a 300cc sports bike?? These are entry level cycles. Neither of them are spirited rides. You have to go to 750cc and up. That said I think my 500 is a great bike it makes riding fun again like when I was much younger, but it isn’t my 1800. You have to have realistic expectations.

There are actually several of them. The three most popular are:


1) Honda CBR300R
2) Kawasaki Ninja 300
3) Yamaha R3


But if you have an 1800...you probably wouldn't enjoy a 300. But there are a lot of them out there....especially outside the USA.

I knew I would get my wrist slapped when I posted my comment and probably deserved it. I bought my 500 to replace my 108cc CT70. It’s posted in my garage if interested in seeing it. I still stand by the post. A 300 is 2 steps above a mini bike 125 Groms take first place and yes I bought a new Grom in 2014. It just sounds wrong to call them “Sports Bikes”. My first bike was a sports bike. CB750F Super Sport. It is always more difficult to convey a thought on the internet. I mean no disrespect to anyone just to say IMO there is no such thing as a 300 cc sports bike without redefining what one is.

As someone who weighed about 220 when he first bought the 300 and now down to 180, I can wholeheartedly endorse this comment. The 300's performance is very sensitive to weight. Feels like a much more agile and "quick" bike now.

I'm at 200lbs now. I need to get back down to 190. But still, I'll make some visits to the dealership and if I can get over that clutch cover sticking out, I'll probably go with the 500 ABS.

First bike recommendation: grom vs 300cc i just want to commute, don't even like highways

Most of the bikes I had in the past I had lean to one side at traffic lights to touch payment. I'm 136 lbs , 5.5 and my Rebel 500 is most perfect fit bike I have ever had.

I have seen a couple YouTube videos of guys riding a cb300f, and the bikes' speedometers were constantly bumping up against 100mph before the rev limiter would kick in. I have never heard of a 300 Rebel hitting 100. It must be engine tuning and gearing.

The CBR also has different camshafts for higher top end HP. I think it has something like 3 more hp, which in an engine this small is %10 more. Then you gotta factor in gearing differences and riding position. Although I’m not actually sure if the CBR is geared any higher or not.
