@rws with the rebel 500 on a rear stand, can I safely lift the front end with a piece of wood across the crankcase/oil pan and a jack? The bike is currently on fork stands but I can’t get the wheel with spacers in place back into position around the fingers of the fork stand.

If you feel you can distribute the weight across enough of the pan go for it. I have seen at least one pan cracked by lifting on it. Pan is only $55.

I've always lifted my bikes by the frame members....making adapters for all of them except my 1100 which some day I'll get around to.

Here's an adapter I made for my 500 when I had it.

In the meantime on my 1100 I have been using a bottle jack with some homemade fittings to lift rear for tire change, chain cleaning/lubing and wheel cleaning. And on front to turn wheel for cleaning.

That's a pretty nifty idea and jacks "powerful" enough to lift a bike are almost free, Amazon has 2tons for 14.99 each.

When I changed my rear tire, I used a simple bottle jack to lift one side at a time while I put a jack stand under the swing arm. Did the right side first. Felt really solid with the 2 jack stands as I was wrestling the rear tire in place.
