attach a milk crate?

I'm cheap: a milk crate + cargo netting let me leave the helmet on the bike, get groceries, carry a backpack without wearing it, etc. The Honda Rear Carrier offends me, expensive and I don't have the passenger seat. I'm thinking some sort of padding, milk crate, and some kind of straps to the side bolt holes on the fender? Or just use the center bolt holes for the seat? Any and all ideas welcome.

I agree the rear carrier for the rebel is insanely high for what it is.
But, if I had to choose between coughing up ~$300 for the carrier vs riding around w/ a milk crate on the back...I'd bite the bullet and just spend the ~$300.

Like DJdavies mentioned, you'd be better off getting a set of saddlebags (Viking bag is a good deal for the price) and a helmet lock license frame. Would still come out cheaper than the Honda rear carrier.

Second attempt. Decided the name of a dairy would lack the dignity befitting the bike, so went plain from the Container Store. They didn't have yellow, so I had to settle for blue.
Like seriously? I understand not wanting to spend a bunch of money, and I agree the honda alternative is obscenely over priced. But why would you go out and buy a new bike and then deface it like that. There are thousands of options for cheap ways to do this. Why would you not just use a black metal wire basket? It would have looked 100 times better . Could have even got a crappy one like this

Same reason people buy a new bike and immediately rip off the fender, and change the bars and lights: Because I like it better this way. All black isn't working for me. I'm just here for the ABS on a good small displacement bike for people with stubby legs. If they'd had a high viz crate, I would have got it. I did look at metal baskets, but they seemed less durable and weatherproof, and would have scratched the precious paint. You'll really aren't going to like my plan for the tank one little bit, so apologies in advance.
