I have a rebel 500 and was wondering what upgrades you would do to it before riding across the USA.

I currently have a windscreen and passenger seat. Would probably add some “knobs” to the rear fender so I could strap bags on the passenger seat.

I would probably add a backrest and maybe a rack to help keep your bag/s secure. Saddle bags to pack your small hard items and duffel bags for soft items like clothes. You don't mention if your camping or staying in lodgings. Here are a few pictures of my packing for motorcycle touring (with camping) from the mid 70's to 2000. You can see that I learned how NOT to pack over the years,

Today, if I camped (I wouldn't) High tech gear would fit in one medium duffel and a weeks worth of clothing in a smaller duffel.

Cramp buster or throttle lock for sure. Roadside assistance with unlimited tow mileage would be nice.
