So, what's the advantage?

They can be placed closer in since you'd only need to see around your torso instead of your arms or shoulders. Two of my bikes have low, narrow (25" and 28") bars/high mirrors so I have to move my upper body to see directly behind. I prefer the more eye-level view and reduced chance of a mirror hitting the tank. The CTX1300 came with low mirrors:

I have bar end mirrors I have used on bikes but always returned to higher mirrors like stock or stock. Easier to look at them and the road. Style wise, they look ok. It's a rider's choice.
