Hi folks,


I heard every engine whether it's a car or motorcycle, you have to break it in the first 600-1000 miles. Cars and motorcycles today are removing things like water temp and tachs, which sucks. I heard you have to keep in between 1k to 4k rpm and fluctuate it.



You guys have any advice on how to break in an engine without a tach? I doubt they already broke it in for you.


Any links to aftermarket tach meters where I can just plug and play?

There's plenty of other Threads on this, but lots of people will tell you different things.

Since there is no Tach. In your Owner's Manual: there is a page that has the shift points.
If i'm remembering correctly its: (IN MPH)
0-15 1st
16-25 2nd
26-35 3rd
36-45 4th
46-55 5th

I don't currently have my bike or my OM with me, but you shift at these speeds, and not at RPMS (those speeds are roughly around when you need to shift RPM wise)
You'll get used to it, and you'll also be able to tell when to shift up/down as you ride more.

I know some people have Tachs, but they have been ones you have to splice into the harness or something like that.

Anyone knows the redline for the Rebel 500?

Found this with a little searching, may not answer your question:
"The Rebel’s 471cc 8-valve, liquid-cooled parallel twin-cylinder engine was taken from the CBR500R sport bike. For cruising duties, revised PGM-FI fuel injection mapping has shifted its character away from the high rpm-focused performance of the CBR to a torque-heavy bottom-end output, with smooth and linear delivery throughout the rev-range. Punchy maximum torque of 32.9 ft/lb TQ @ 6,000rpm combines with peak horsepower of 45 HP @ 8,500rpm".


Maybe you can find the CBR500R redline online? Answering my own question from a CBR500 Forum dated 2013: "So I just finished breaking in my Cbr and drove it around to see what it got. I noticed its redline limiter is at 9,200rpm"

I tried to discover the speed per 1000rpm for every gear to get around no tach. Honda UK and dealer could not tell me. One thing I would say is that it is probably more important not to under rev it than to over rev it.

Thanks for the answers, guys.

The most important thing right now is breaking in the new engine properly so I can prolong the life of the engine/tranny, given the info I gave above. Any advice on this?
