I do not ride a great deal. It has only been ~1500 miles in the past year since my initial oil change. I note that the next one is 8,000 miles but there is a note to change every year. I wonder if this is really a necessity ?

If you aren't riding a lot changing once a year is a good idea, it will get rid of moisture that can accumulate inside the engine. As far as the 8000 miles changes go, if I was selling bikes I'd recommend that, but since I'm buying bikes, I change the oil at 4000 miles.

I am always amazed how we purchase motorcycles from a manufacturer that doesn't know how much air to put in the tires and how often the oil filter ans oil needs changed.

I do similar miles to you on two bikes and they get at least oil and filter change. Plus any 'next service' items.
I do the same with my Mini, even though it specifies 2-yearly. I cannot believe oil lasts for two years.

I ride 3 bikes. None more than 4K miles per year. They get an oil change in the spring no matter the miles. Weather in the south let’s me ride year round not much in Jan- mar so I never put them away.

for me I follow the rule of whichever occurs first. so if you were to ride 8k miles in 6 months, i'd change it then. however in your situation you've hit the year mark but less than 8k. so it's still time to change.
first year I put 5500 miles on the bike, and still changed the oil. it's once a year, and a half hour of your time (at most) why not invest that minimal amount of time and take care of your bike.

Don't know what the weather is like where you are but here in Maine we get 6 months of riding weather and 6 months of storage. Come spring there will be several days where the temperature change will pass through the dew point and beyond. Cold engine, cold oil, in the 30's and a warm day in the 50's generates a lot of condensation on the warm side of a cold barrier. I'd guess that more than a few droplets of water are formed inside the air space of the crankcase during these days. It's not a problem if the engine is run frequently or at least soon after and for a good amount after one of these condensation events. If your bike is stored in a heated space no problem.

The other consideration is oil is cheap, motorcycles are expensive.

I change my oil every year - or every oil change interval - whichever comes first.
