Bike has 4k miles. One morning I started it up, rode about 1/4 of a mile, normal/casual shifting and throttle, and I felt it sputter and hesitate while riding in 4th. Kinda like a misfire sorta. So I pulled over, and engaged the clutch, and then the bike stalled. I parked it. Didn't ride it for a few days, then tried riding it, same thing happened, but this time it stalled almost each time i engaged the clutch and sputters randomly in all gears. Parked it. Air filter looked ok, fuel is premium from costco, crankcase breather was empty, oil looks good.. haven't checked the spark plugs or fuel filter.. any ideas what I've got going on?

question on fueling---did you over fill?

Know this might sound silly but did you fill the tank too full of gas? If it is too full it's not getting air to breathe in there and if the gas expanded within the tank same type of situation. Just a thought I had but like others check all electrical connections. Start simple and work up to expensive issues.

Could be water in the fuel caused by the ethanol pulling moisture out of the air. You could try dumping your fuel and filling up with rec fuel if it's available in your area.

I ended up taking it to a local shop. 2 week turn around time. $80 an hour. I gotta learn to work on this bike bc repair costs are insane. I don't think the gas was overfilled. Plus I let it idle for awhile and it idled ok. Even rode it a few blocks so any overruling would have burned off.. I opened the gas cap and re-closed it. So that all should be ok. The guy that I bought it from had an after market headlight that I replaced with the stock light. He had one of those usb trickle chargers that I removed. And he had a gear shift indicator that is still Installed. Other than that, it's stock. The headlight was just a bunch of plugs so nothing requiring splicing. I noticed a few threads indicating the battery might be slightly drained? It idles fine, and even takes off nicely. Just in 4th, sometimes 3rd, it bucks a little like a second of power loss. I'm sure it's an easy fix that will cost me $80 dollars

got a call from the bike shop today. I asked them if they figured out what the issue was. they said they couldnt replicate it. They said they adjusted the clutch cable and rode it for 5 miles. I just dont understand how the bike wasnt showing the symptoms that i was dealing with. The bike was sputtering non stop and stalling out every time when i was riding it. Then i drop it off and boom, fixes itself? The mechanic said he took an hour to look the bike over. So riding it 5 miles and adjusting the clutch would take an hour? Super frustrating bc i know when i get the bike back, ill be half way home and the bike will sputter out and stall on me. Thank you to everyone who messaged me ideas of what to look for! Ride safe

Here is another longshot - Does it occur when it is cold and humid or possibly very hot outside? If so, it may be electrical. If there is a crack in a fuse or relay it can short out. Never had it happen on a bike, but had a furnace and a guitar amplifier that worked only in dry, moderate temps. :)

I assume the bike has fuel pump somewhere and I had a car with a bad pump that randomly cut out on me. Symptoms sound similar.

If the engine was running so poorly, I would've thought the "check engine" light would've come on. I'm looking to buy a used 2018 and the manual shows that it does have a MIL on it (Malfunction Indicator Light, the proper terminology for "check engine" warning lights under OBDII specs). I'm hoping to get this bike so I can test my scantool on it to see what kind of data is displayed on my scanner and such. I had to get a special adapter since bikes don't have a standard OBDII connector like on cars/trucks. But, since it has an emission control system, it must have similar data available. I'll let you guys know what it has available if I'm successful in buying this used bike.
