Bought my 2017 Rebel 300 today, couple questions for the vets..

Hey ya'll,

Purchased my first bike today! Had a couple questions in regards to shifting: Thus far I shift like this

1st to 2nd 17mph

2nd to 3rd 25mph

3rd to 4th 33mph

4th to 5th 40mph

5th to 6th 50mph


Is this right? wrong? Its not even close to what the manual says but it feels right. To be honest I haven't even gotten passed 4th gear yet out of fear I will ruin the bike. bought it with 600mi on it so I believe im still in the "break in" period. As far as listening to the engine goes, the previous owner installed a "shotgun" exhaust which is very loud. I'm scared I may be waiting to long to shift, and due to how loud the bike is I may not realize I'm revving far to high. Its seemingly difficult to get an honest read without a tach, considering im a total noob and its my first bike ever, i just went off what I read on another thread. Again this is a rebel 300 not 500 so the shifts may be slightly if not drastically different. Please let me know what you all think!

Secondly, I was hoping someone could give me some advice on the downshifting gears and speeds associated with them, it seems like every time I attempt a downshift the bike jolts as if it will stall so I haven't attempted it more than twice. My best guess is that I am going to fast for the gear I am in (tried going from 3rd to 2nd at 19 mph and it jolted me pretty good, scary but no harm done just pulled the clutch back in, braked, and got back down to 1st). I am very curious about downshifting and how you all react when pulling up to a read light and it turns green. Do I slow to 12mph, drop from 3rd to 2nd and engage with some throttle??) I really dont know. Any and all advice will be truly appreciated. I have not even taken my MSF course yet I'm just riding around in my neighborhood.

My advice is to limit your riding until you take the MSF course - you don't want to develop any bad habits to unlearn.

I'll second you need the MFS course. I just finished mine this past weekend. If you're a total noob like me..you NEED this course!

Drive by the feel, not the sounds. Obviously take the class!!
Depending on my speed approaching lights if I'm in 3rd I clutch and coast then drop to second, then neutral we stop. If I'm going faster I may downshift to 4th and engine break then again to third or clutch in till I'm slow enough to pop to nuetral. But that's me

IMO, your shift points aren't bad but I've never ridden the 300. As far as downshifting, make sure that you're in the range for the gear that you're going into. For example your range in first gear is 0-17, second is 17-25, third is 25-33 etc. - don't shift from third to second unless you're speed is less than 25.

Re your exhaust, the 500 has the catalytic converter in the system prior to where you join a slip on pipe, the 300 does not. This means you are running what is essentially a straight through system. This would indeed be quite loud I would think and may not be legal. I'm in Australia though so you would need to check local regulations of course.

I don't even look at the speedometer when deciding to shift. Get into the habit of "feeling" your bike rather than memorizing when to shift.

Thank you for all the replies. I will be taking the msf course next weekend. Very hard to control my impulse not to ride the bike >< I hate that you have to schedule courses out here months in advance, everyone wants a bike in the desert! But yes any downshifting speed information is welcomed and appreciated! Anything helps.

Two things about down shifting.
1. You wanna rev match meaning keep the rpms in the range of the gear as you let the clutch out. The bike has no rpm so you will just have to get more use to it over time.

2. Down shifting you may want to let the clutch out slightly slower ans smoother. Im not positive on the 300, but on my 500 shifting from second to first is by far the most temperamental. Doesn't downshift smoothly until under 10mph unless I am rev matching.
