Make sure the rubber grommets are seated properly in their housings and the put a little wax, or dry lube, on the post before firmly seating the plastic covers.

Thanks. Why? Could it break putting it back on?

It just makes it easier to pop them back on. It's easy, don't worry.

Only a fool would attempt it, and God help me, I am that fool.

Raises hand. $12 later, I made sure it was seated firmly.

When I first rode my bike home from the dealer I had to stop and pop one of the side covers down, it was about to seek communion with the highway.

Mine had one of the grommets folded halfway into the hole. It can happen with hasty assembly, have a good light source going when you put them back on and make sure the two top pegs go in right, then the last one will be properly aligned to go in without a fuss.
Thankfully there's nothing much under them that needs attention.

Yarrr matey, I don't see a story there, but thanks for the effort of taking a pic.
No law says the dipstick has to be hard or straight ( insert off-color comment here lol ).
Old jeep gas gauges were nothing more than a length of broomstick, and thrown in the back when not needed.
