Oil change questions

I'm still a ways off from my first oil change on my Rebel 300, but planning ahead is what I do.

Most of my questions have been answered in other posts in this forum and via a couple of YouTube videos, but not all. Here are my question:

1. 10W-30 or 10W-40? My manual specifies 10W-30 but 10W-40 seem to be more common. Is this just a matter of preference or are the reasons to use one over the other?

2. Crush ring. I've seen references to this but can't figure out where the ring goes. Can someone clear this up for me?

3. How long will motor oil keep? Buying a gallon is cheaper than buying by the quart, but will the unused portion keep until the next oil change?

4. Besides your local Honda dealership, does any one have any recommendations for where to buy the stuff you need for an oil change? Has any one used Partzilla?

Thanks in advance!

1. 10W-30 since it is what the manual specifies.
2. The crush ring is on the oil drain bolt.
3. The oil if closed will keep for quite some time. It will likely last until your next oil change but that depends on how long it takes you to ride the miles required to need another oil change.
4. I went to a Napa auto supply and ordered Amsoil oil. You can get some items online. Check revzilla, partzilla, even amazon.

During the summer I put in 10W-40 because I live in the Sonoran Desert. It coats better in the high heat. If you don't live in a hot place 10W-30 is good. 10W-30 is what the manual calls for, but here most Honda and motorcycle shops put in 10W 40 in the Desert summer time and 10W 30 during the winter.

Regardless if you use 10-30 or 10-40, make sure you use JASO spec MA or MA2. Do not use conventional automobile motor oil.

I get my oil change stuff from Amazon. I live out in the sticks so it saves me the 30 minute trip into town.

You can order a bag of 20 crush washers on Amazon for 7 bucks. That will probably last the life of the motorcycle!

Crush Rings:
https://www.amazon.com/20-Pack-Honda...omotive&sr=1-3

Oil:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G8OQZOM...v_ov_lig_dp_it

Oil Filter:
OEM Part Number: 15410-MFJ-D01 (costs like 12 bucks on Amazon)

If you have Amazon prime you get it the next day most of the time.

Motor oil will keep for years. Some might object to this but how is it going to go bad or expire if its not used??

Go to any auto store for your "parts".
Just as mentioned but the right type oil. And I'm sure not all stores have motorcycle oil.

A google search should give you all the info you need.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone.

After some price shopping on the internet, I'm finding the that Partzilla has good prices. Free shipping isn't included until you reach $150, but shipping cost are quite reasonable. Here are some prices I found on their site:

Part Item Number Price
WASHER, DRAIN PLUG (12MM) 94109-12000 $0.79
ELEMENT, OIL FILTER 15410-KYJ-902 $6.15
GN4 10W30 (GALLON) 08C35-A131L02 $19.77
GASKET, OIL FILTER COVER 15412-KYJ-901 $3.64
BOLT, DRAIN PLUG (12MM) 90061-KYJ-900 $0.67

I also found some references on the net that indicate motor oil should have a shelf life of about 5 years under ideal conditions. I'm sure my garage is not the ideal environment, but a couple of years seems reasonable.

But this brings up more questions for me. How often should one change the oil? Is the frequency the same for the 300 vs 500? Oddly, I can't find this information in my manual.

I measured the ID of a drain washer I took off and it is 12mm.

The one on the link you supplied for cars seem to be 14.2 mm ID.

Not sure I would use those drain plug washers. Prefer the ID being closer to the threads of the drain plug and covering more of the bolt head flange.

What is the link to Partzilla, I DuckDuckgo it (I don't use google since they track your info and searches) and it doesn't come up.
