Question Can't decide between bikes.

Hi,
I found a slightly used 2017 Rebel 300 with 600 miles on it. But! It's only $250 less than a brand new Rebel 300 from a dealer. Is there anything I would get with a brand new bike that would be worth the $250 price difference?
Also, I am having a hard time picking between 300 standard and 500ABS. The difference is $2K, which is quite a bit. I am a brand new rider, and I am sure the 300 would work for me to start off with my short commute. I am going to be using surface streets in the beginning, but even if I take the highway, it's only about 7 miles on the highway with a 65 mph speed limit and I have heard that the 300 would be fine for that.
However, since it's a brand new bike, I feel I will have it for a long time. Once I get a couple of years of experience, would a 300 still be a good choice? Or is a 500 a better choice to "grow into"? Also, how much of a safety upgrade is the ABS option?
I would appreciate any thoughts or comments.
Thank you.

I would say ABS would be a major safety upgrade, as for growing into the bike it's up to the rider but for me I started with the Rebel 500 abs as my first bike and was no issue with power or anything. For the riding you're doing I say it would be fine I guess to get the 300. Have to think long and hard about it.

EDIT. this looks like a better video.

Dealers here in CA also charge freight and setup charges that add hundreds of dollars to the MSRP (then tax on top), so make sure your difference is really $250.

I was in a similar position, I ended up getting the Rebel 500 ABS. The extra power and safety feature are definitely worth the extra 2k in my opinion. I learned to ride on a 250cc bike and that was not enough power for me. 500 is a sweet spot for a first time rider.

Was never any doubt for me. 500 abs any day. And it's my first ever motorcycle also. Had barely ever driven anything on two wheels before I decided to get my license for it.
I see so many people regretting getting the 300 instead of the 500, simply because they outgrow them within 2-3 months.

Agree with everyone else here. The 500 is definitely the better choice short term and long term. I didn't have the ABS option available when I purchased mine, but I'd available I'd definitely go for that.

If money is tight though, wheel and deal that 300 down more...

If you can do the 500 I'd go with that. Find out the true cost of the new 300 - taking into account freight, setup and any other dealer charges before you dismiss the used on as only $250 less. You probably still have to pay license and in some places (like California) sales tax.

500, for sure. There is no reason to go 300, at all imo. Listen I know this isn't going to be popular but the simple truth is that for street 300 and below isn't enough. You need power to maneuver and it just isn't enough. I learned on a 600 that made 80hp to ride and all you need is self control and you won't have any problems. Get the 500 and get a "real bike" - you'll outgrow the 300 in weeks.

There’s truth in what you say here.
I have the 300 & out grew it before I even bought it as it wasn’t the bike I planned to buy, was going for a 650.
I use mine for the city which is near home and exploring the local countryside, so I’m just plodding around really.

What I have learnt over time is that the 500 top end speed is not much more than the 300.
Having said that my friend has had many big bikes but he's very happy & loves his 300 & plans to keep for many years.
I, on the other hand like the Rebel for its looks, design, customisation potentials, “but it just doesn’t give you that thrill”.
So I’ll ‘not’ be keeping it for many years.
