New Rebel VS Old School Cool



Motorcyclist first saw the Honda CMX250, or Rebel 250, in 1985 and observed that, “By targeting the bike to a young audience, Honda hopes to attract newcomers and expand the motorcycle market.” The affordable Rebel 250 certainly lived up to its expectation by drawing in a variety of riders and becoming a common sight in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's certified rider-training courses.

Production has been on and off since it was first introduced, but it’s still part of Honda’s lineup even after 32 years and for 2017, Honda decided to give the old cruiser-style motorcycle and upgrade.

Their latest iteration of the classic Rebel comes in two flavours, the Rebel 300 is powered by a 286cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke and the Rebel 500 a 471cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin four-stroke. Both are mated to a six-speed transmission and equipped with a sizeable 2.96 gallon fuel tank.

Like its predecessor, the 2017 Rebel is a motorcycle of mass-appeal; low seat height of 27.2 inches for a variety of riders, smooth accelerator, claimed fuel efficiency of 67-78 mpg, brakes with aggressive early bite and it’s a great bike for casual riding.

The 2017 Rebel 300 and 500 won’t be canyon carvers, but they’re perfect for new riders or those who are past their knee-dragging and wheelie having days. How do you think the new Rebel stacks up against its old school predecessor?

I had a couple of the original 80's Rebels, and although I liked them fine enough - there is NO COMPARISON! My new 500 is a "FOREVER" bike, while the 250's were only for teaching new riders skills. For me anyway. My 250's were kept around just for newbs to have fun on, while this new 500 is MY BIKE, and I'm not sure if I'll EVER let anyone else ride it!

Yep, no comparison indeed.

Because it's like saying a Camaro is an upgraded Chevette: they have absolutely nothing in common and no relation or shared history & DNA...but in this case the bikes have nothing in common and share the same name anyways.

I think there is still a lot to be said for the old school Rebel 250. I'm old school (age 59) and have owned 4 of them since 1985. I bought a brand new 2016 a couple of years ago for about half price. I like it's style, and air cooled carbureted engine. It is completely freeway capable, I have ridden it between 80-85 mph all day before. The seat is a bit uncomfortable for my size (6' 240) The new Rebels are simply beyond my price point. The 2016 would have been as well, at full price with all the fees. I have bought a lot of used bikes over the past 10 years, and will probably never be able to buy another new one, unless it is a 50cc scooter. Enjoy your new Rebels.

But... anyway, shouldnt we compare the old 450 rebel with the new 500 and the old 250 with the new 300? In that case the comparison maybe could make sense...
But my money goes with the 500😍

Had a 1987 Rebel 450 which we traded for the new 500 as soon as it was released in UK. The 450 prob looked old school cooler I reckon. But that’s about the only area it scores better than the 500.

I said it before and I'll say it again, you CAN'T compare the 250 (or 450) to the 300/500.

> color & chrome vs black and more black (does painting one or two components really count anymore?)
> disc front/rear drum brakes vs disc front/disc rear brakes (don't forget ABS as an option to only one side)
> air cooled vs liquid cooled
> carburetor vs fuel injection
> two valves/cylinder vs four valves/cylinder
> square bore vs undersquare bore
> for the 500 --- single pin crank vs offset crankpins
> for the 300 --- twin vs single

It's pointless to compare them, like I said: Camaro and Chevette, they share absolutely nothing in common but the number of wheels. It's not even apples and oranges, it's more like apples and cows.
