Engine Oil Recommendation for Rebel 500

In the manual it says viscosity recommendation is SAE 10W-30. I had success using Mobil 1 Advanced Synthetic Motorcycle Engine Oil in the past on my 03 Ninja 500, but the viscosity for this brand is 10W-40. Is anyone using this exact brand and having success and trouble-free operation?

Or, what engine oil do y'all recommend for the 500 Rebel?

Oil needs to meet JASO MA or MA2 specs. and the manual recommends Honda GN4 10W-30. If you go with something other than the recommended product this could void warranty if you are worried about that. That being said I've been using Shell Rotella® T4 15W-40 for the last two oil changes and haven't had any issues. As long as your Mobile 1 meets the JASA spec then I don't see an issue especially for the summer months.

I have benn using Shell Rotella® T4 15W-40 in scooters and a star 250 for years with no problems. It's a good money saver at about $13 a gallon at Walmart.

But have decided to use Honda GN4 10W-30 in the Rebel 300 and Super cub c125. Cost is double $26 a gallon than Rotella, but the Rebel and Cub don't take that much oil.

As long as I still get excited to go for a ride, I'll be riding. In the end it may be a moped, but I'll still be riding.

You only have today, go for a ride

Ride and be Free

2018 Rebel 300

The numbers mean something -
10w-30
The weight or viscosity changes with the oil temp.
The number along with the "W" is the viscosity of the oil when its cold - 10,
the number after the dash without the "W" is the hot oil viscosity - 30.
As the temps go up the oil thins out, higher number, thinner oil.

So if you were to use 10w-40 your going to be just fine.
In fact if your in the desert SW your temps there are very hot and you might benefit from 40 weight. Dont want the oil to thin out to much.

Ii'ts NOT going to ruin the engine just because you use 40 instead of 30. That is not a concern.

Sorry got that wrong above - 10 weight is thinner than 30 weight.
AND - The only difference between 10w30 and 10w40 oil is their thickness at engine operating (hot) temperatures.
